Polyester is a tightly woven synthetic fibre that doesn't absorb moisture. It pushes sweat to the fabric surface, but in humid weather (or against a sweating body), that sweat doesn't evaporate fast enough. It sits trapped between the fabric and your skin, along with sebum, dead skin cells, and the bacteria that naturally live on the body.

Warm, damp, and sealed in is exactly the environment bacteria multiply in. That bacterial growth is what causes the smell that won't wash out of polyester activewear. It's also what causes the rashes, itching, and breakouts that most women blame on "sweat" but is actually a fabric problem.
