Moulded built-in cups vs removable pads: which stays put?
Removable pads sit in a fabric pocket, so they move. They fold at the edge, slide sideways when you pull the bra on, and work their way out in the wash. Moulded built-in cups are shaped and stitched into the bra itself, so there is nothing to shift and nothing to lose. If you have ever fished a crumpled pad out of a washing machine, that is the difference.
Why removable pads move
A removable pad is a flat or lightly curved piece of foam held in a pocket of fabric, usually open at the side or the bottom. The pocket has to be bigger than the pad for the pad to go in. That gap is where the trouble starts.
- They fold at the edge. Pull the bra over your head and the pad catches, bends and stays bent.
- They rotate. Nothing holds the pad in a fixed position, so it turns through the day.
- They come out in the wash. Most care labels tell you to remove them first, which is a design problem described as an instruction.
- They go flat. A loose pad compresses faster than a moulded cup because nothing is holding its shape.
On a fuller bust this gets worse, not better. A bigger cup means a bigger pocket, more room for the pad to travel, and more weight pressing the pad out of shape.
What moulded built-in cups do differently
A moulded cup is heat-shaped into a curve, then built into the bra as part of its structure. It is not sitting in a pocket. There is no opening, nothing to insert, nothing to take out.
Because the cup already holds a shape, it does three things a loose pad cannot. It keeps the bust separated instead of compressing it flat. It holds that shape through washing. And it gives a smooth line under clothes without you adjusting anything.
The trade-off is honest: you cannot take moulded cups out. If you prefer a bra you can wear with no padding at all, this is not that bra.
The difference at a glance
| Removable pads | Moulded built-in cups | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is held | Loose, in a fabric pocket | Shaped and built into the bra |
| Folding and shifting | Common | Nothing to shift |
| In the wash | Usually taken out first | Washes with the bra |
| Shape over time | Flattens as the foam compresses | Holds its shape |
| Can you remove it | Yes | No |
How to tell which one you are buying
Product pages are not always clear, so check these instead.
- Read the care label. "Remove pads before washing" means removable pads.
- Look for the word insert. Removable, insertable, adjustable pads and "pads included" all mean the same thing.
- Check the inside photo. If there is a slit or opening at the side or bottom of the cup, it is a pocket.
- Press the cup. A moulded cup springs back into its curve. A loose pad folds and stays folded.
How ours are built
The Full Coverage Sports Bra has moulded cups built in, so there are no pads to insert, remove or lose. A wide underband carries the support, with a high neckline and racerback so nothing gaps or slips mid-session. It is medium to high impact, built for gym sessions, weight training, cycling, pilates, court sport and running.
If you are not sure which level you need, here is how impact levels map to workouts.
Sizes run S to XL, with cups A to G, on Qurve™ nylon-spandex at 220 GSM. Polyester-free and Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 certified, tested for over 100 harmful substances.
Common questions
Are moulded cups the same as padding?
Not quite. Padding adds volume. A moulded cup is a shaped structure that holds the bust in position and keeps a smooth line. It gives shape through its form rather than through thickness.
Do moulded cups make you look bigger?
No. They hold shape rather than adding volume, so they keep the bust separated and supported instead of flattening it the way a compression bra does.
Can I take the cups out of a QivoFit bra?
No. They are moulded and built into the bra. That is deliberate, so there is nothing to fold, shift or lose in the wash.
Do moulded cups work for a fuller bust?
Yes, and the difference is bigger there. A loose pad has more room to move in a larger cup, and more weight pressing it out of shape. A moulded cup stays where it is. Ours go up to cup G, and here is how band-driven sizing works.
How do I wash a bra with moulded cups?
Cold water, gentle cycle, inside out, and skip the fabric softener. Reshape the cups with your hand and air dry. Nothing to remove first.
